How to make Cat6 patch cable
Cat6 cable is the standard for gigabit Ethernet. It contains four twisted pairs of copper wire. In this wire there is a longitudinal separator which separates each of the four pairs of twisted wire from each other due to which it reduce crosstalk and just because of this it allows fast data transfer. Cat6 cable has high bandwidth. It support 10 gigabit Ethernet and operate up to 250 MHz. It is backward compatible with the old CAT5/5e standards. The maximum length of cat6 cable is 100 m.
Here are some instruction steps to make Cat6 patch cable ---
- To make a patch cable first you need to cuts cat6 cable one inch back and strip it.
- Now within 1/8'' of the jacket, untwist the wire.
- Now conductor pairs exposed. Just separate and straighten them. Just pull first and last pair to their respective side. Pull orange to the left and brown to the right next split green pair. Means pull white conductor to the left and green to the right. Now you are with the blue pair in the middle. Untwist them all but not further.
- Now we have separated and straightened wire pair. According to the wiring standard arrange the conductor in the proper order. You can opt from 568-A or 568-B wiring standard. 568-B is common one. Find the proper color code for pin-out. After arranging wires in proper order placed them tightly together.
- Now make sure that wires are in the proper order before continuing this step. To fit in to RJ45 connectors trim the conductors down. Cut wire about 1 of an inch from the end of jacket by cutting it at 90 degree angle. Make a straight cut so that each of wire can reach to the contacts in the connector. Never try to leave conductor too long while you are crimping the connector because due to this jacketing will not be gripped.
- Now we have our cat6 patch cable ready for termination. Hold cable firmly and place conductors in to their proper location in the RJ45 modular connector. Hold the RJ45 plug with the pins facing up toward you and carefully insert the conductors holding so that they maintain their order. Properly seat the wires against the contacts in the connector. After doing this take a look at the tip of the connector. You should also take notes on the color of the cable. All whites should be on the top and all the colored conductors on the bottom.
Now place the arrange wire in to modular crimping tool. At the time of crimping the connector, you should make sure that you should use the full stroke of the crimp tool so that the contacts properly “bite” in to the conductors. After this makes sure that all the pins were crimped and that they made good contact with the conductors.
